the fantasy made real
Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them above.

Look, you wanted one. I wanted one. We all wanted one. When concept artist Adam Adamowicz was drawing this thing for Bethesda in 2006 or whenever, he was not thinking about ergonomics. This thing has none. It’s a two pound pseudo-dieselpunk thing that’s supposed to hang via friction on your dangling forearm, a famously cone-shaped part of the body. Wearing it any way besides a circulation-cutting death clamp invariably causes it to slide uncomfortably and loosely down onto your hand after 30 seconds. The controls are placed on the left of the display so that using them with your right hand in the way it naturally falls covers the screen. The thick bangle leaves you unable to rest your arm comfortably on a table. In other words, it’s the Pip-Boy 3000A.And yet the Wand company’s hardware execution is basically perfect. They cost engineered it down to 300 dollars, they improved their simulated CRT from the Fallout show Pip-Boy, they added a headphone jack/antenna plug and redid the FM radio interface, they scaled and modeled the device using the actual game files as reference, they added a spacer to accommodate more sizes, and they designed a well-disguised hasp so you don’t have to saw an arm off to remove it. The lug for the hasp is a plastic sawtooth molded into the back case which I suspect is actually more secure than the prior threadforming screws that anchored the metal hasp to the plastic on the Fallout show’s Pip-Boy. The metal stand is as professional as the last one. The new accelerometer-based tap-to-fix-the-vertical-hold feature feels very snappy. I’m sure it has the same replaceable battery and microsd card slot on the back of the motherboard that the last Pip-Boy had, but I haven’t looked yet. Most of the body is ABS which is what Legos are and I suspect the die-cast faceplate is made of something called Zamak which is the plastic of the metallurgical world. This is to be expected for a prop replica, of course. As for the software? That’s a little bit more crusty of a situation right now. The full huge library of items to choose from contains some of the same duplicated items the actual games had in them, indicating a direct asset dump (which imo is pretty funny.) My example has a bugged inventory system where trying to modify the list screws it up, and at one point I think it forgot it was supposed to be in New Vegas mode which caused it to forget all my perks and skills. I did some napkin math on how many alcoholic drinks I had ever had in my life and found myself becoming bored trying to scroll the “chems taken” stat up to the number I wanted. Oh well. The thing is, the Wand Company is awesome. They issued firmware patches to the Fallout show Pip-Boy and I’m sure they’ll do the same for this one too. I bought mine very very early via preorder from months ago which means I got an early one. Chances are they’ll fix many bugs and maybe add features (they may already have.) You can update the firmware via the USB-C port.Anyways, in short it’s the 3000A. It’s an older model and a bit basic but you could probably drop a bomb on it and it would still work. Hell, I know you could.

Excellent prop. I remember making so many of these when I was a kid out of foam, cardboard, what have you. This was an upgrade that would make me as a child probably cry. Packaging was fantastic, the box it comes is reusable so don’t throw it away! It’s meant to be a storage case for it if you’re moving it or taking it somewhere. I think someone else on here who left a bad review didn’t read the instructions or look in the box at all, because there’s an extender in the box to help it fit much easier.

Nice replica. It is a little bigger than the diecast one from the show. The problem is, this one is still too small. I don’t have a big wrist so I can’t imagine many could actually wear it for cosplay.

If you were wondering no it doesn’t have the radios from the games, but that doesn’t make it a bad product. I have had it for a couple of hours and the wow factor is still there. This is the ultimate prop for the ultimate Fallout fan.

Band is really small, even with the extender. I can’t express how disappointed I am. I may return the pip-boy… It’s supposed to be worn with the memory foam, like in the game. I shouldn’t have to take it out in order to wear this…
